Redland, QLD – 15-year-old artist and musician Amalia Safonova is set to unveil a new art exhibition at the Redland Coast Art Society Gallery, featuring a myriad of ornate illustrations. Her fantastical creatures will be on display from the 1st to the 15th of May.

With a collection of over 100 works, Amalia’s latest exhibition, titled “My Nightmare Children”, is set to feature countless new works of her whimsical creatures, each with a name and accompanying backstory that bring them to life and make them truly unique. Hand-drawn with brush pen and ink throughout over a year, each personage is imbued with a wealth of personality, and Amalia notes that exhibition attendees will be delighted to find parallels between the characters on the page and people in their lives.

“I think each and every one of us has met a ‘Jimmy’ or even a ‘William’ at some point in our lives,” states Amalia, referring to her artworks.
"I've personally found the process of finding similarities between the people I know and these silly creatures almost as fun as drawing them. They're kind of like 'reverse caricatures' in a way."

Amalia began her art journey at a young age, showing a profound talent for the visual arts with her first pieces, which she created at the age of 5. Finding great success in several mediums ranging from simple everyday pencil drawings to elaborate oil paintings and pastel works, Amalia has garnered the attention of artists across Australia and earned several prizes for her works. Being predominantly a self-taught artist, her skill is especially remarkable, standing alongside that of academically trained artists and proving that dedication and passion are all you need for success.

While the exhibition opens on the 1st of May, attendees can come along to the official opening on the 3rd of May, 4:30 to 7:30 pm, which will feature an opening concert performed by none other than the artist herself, accompanied by her brother. In addition to her skill as an artist, Amalia is a talented musician, currently studying classical voice and flute at the Queensland Conservatorium. The opening will also feature some light snacks, opportunities to purchase merchandise and a raffle.
